Two from nine. The commentator says it slowly, twice, and the inference arrives fully formed. He does not handle the big moments.

Almost nothing about that inference survives contact with the sample size. A tour match might produce eight or ten break points across three sets. Points are won and lost on a handful of shots, and the variance around a small number of high stakes points is enormous. Take a player whose true conversion rate is a perfectly respectable forty percent and let him play nine break points. The chance he converts two or fewer is far from small. You would see that scoreline regularly from a player with no psychological problem at all, purely from the arithmetic.

Then there is who he is playing. Break points are contested on the opponent's serve, by definition, which means the number is at least as much a measurement of the server as of the returner. A returner facing someone who can put a first serve on the line at will on a quick hard court will convert less than the same man facing a second serve specialist on clay, and neither figure tells you anything about his nerve.

There is also a selection effect nobody mentions. The players who generate the most break points are frequently the ones with the best returns, and generating many chances against strong servers guarantees a lower conversion percentage than generating three chances against a weak one. The metric punishes the skill it is supposed to reward.

What I would look at instead is what happened on the break point rather than whether it went in. Did he get a look at a second serve. Did he step in. Did the rally last more than four shots, which is the honest sign of a returner who neutralised the serve and then lost a normal rally, as opposed to one who never touched the ball.

Where I will concede ground is that pressure is real and measurable in aggregate. Over a career, across thousands of points, some players genuinely do serve better at deuce and hit fewer unforced errors at set point, and those differences are big enough to matter.

But you cannot see it in one afternoon, and the number on the graphic is not evidence of anything except that a difficult thing was attempted nine times.
