Shots taken with a defender arriving late break down mechanically in ways that show up long before the percentage does.
A rushed jumper is a defensive statistic
The interesting thing about a contested jump shot is not that it goes in less often. Everyone knows that. The interesting thing is how it fails.
A clean catch and shoot has a repeatable shape. Feet arrive before the ball, the knees load, the release comes at the top of the jump, and the ball leaves with an arc somewhere in the mid forties. When a closeout arrives half a beat early, almost none of that survives. The shooter jumps forward instead of up, because forward is what a body does when it wants to beat something. The release point drops, since a rushed arm does not have time to fully extend. Arc flattens. And a flat ball has a smaller effective target at the rim, which is the whole reason the percentage collapses.
This is why I am suspicious of contest rate as a defensive metric on its own. A hand in the face after the ball has gone contests nothing. The measurable effect comes from arriving during the shooter's gather, a window of maybe a quarter of a second, and the difference between a defender who consistently lands inside that window and one who is always a step late does not appear in a contest percentage.
It is very visible in shot arc data, which teams already collect for their own shooters. Run it the other way. Take your opponents' attempts, split by whether your closeout arrived before or after the gather, and look at the arc distribution rather than the make rate. Make rate is noisy across a season. Arc is not, because it is mechanical.
There is a coaching consequence I like. It changes what you tell a defender who has been beaten. The standard instruction is to run at the shooter and contest, which produces late arrivals, fouls, and the occasional spectacular block that gets clipped and shared. The better instruction is to run to a spot and stop short with a high hand, and it arrives earlier precisely because it does not require hard deceleration at the end.
Boring. Effective. The blocked shot is the highlight, but the flattened arc is the win, and nobody is going to make a montage out of that.
