The advertisement shows airflow lines curling round a beam and promises a faster swing. It is not exactly a lie. It is a true statement about a quantity too small to notice, sold to distract from the quantity that matters and cannot be marketed because it has an unglamorous name.

The physics is not complicated. Drag on a racket head moving through air at serving speeds exists and can be measured in a tunnel, and a smoother beam profile reduces it. But the resistance an arm feels while accelerating a racket is dominated by inertia, not by air. What you are fighting is the mass distribution of the frame about the axis you are rotating it around, and that is swingweight. Two frames with identical drag and a thirty point difference in swingweight feel like different sports. Two frames with identical swingweight and different beam shaping feel the same, whatever the box says.

Swingweight is the number I wish shops printed on the shelf. It explains almost everything players describe in vaguer language. A high swingweight frame plows through the ball, gives a heavier reply and punishes you when you are late. A low one whips round quickly, serves well and gets pushed about on the return. Every complaint about a racket being unstable or sluggish is usually a swingweight conversation happening in the wrong vocabulary.

There is a second neglected number, the twistweight, which describes resistance to rotation about the long axis of the frame. That is what determines how much you lose on a ball struck two centimetres from the centre. Given that most amateur contacts are off centre, I would argue it is more relevant to a club player than anything else on the specification sheet, and virtually nobody knows their own.

The uncomfortable part is that these properties are cheap to modify and expensive to sell. Four grams of lead tape at the right place on a frame you already own changes the racket more than any new model will, and it costs less than a tube of balls. No brand has an incentive to say so.

So try the same frame in three different strung weights before you try three different frames.

The air was never the problem. Your arm was doing the work all along.
