Play at Wimbledon stops for reasons that are not always obvious to a spectator watching a light drizzle or a bright evening sky. The thresholds come from surface safety and from planning conditions rather than from player preference.
Wet grass fails before it looks unplayable
Grass loses grip long before it looks wet on camera. A player pushing off a damp surface can slide unpredictably, and the resulting knee and ankle injuries are the kind that end seasons.
The referee therefore reacts to moisture on the blades rather than to rainfall itself, which is why covers appear during drizzle that would not interrupt a match on a hard court.
Once the covers come off, the surface still needs time to dry and be inspected. The delay after rain stops is a drying interval, not administrative caution.
Light is judged against the ball, not the sky
A tennis ball travelling at high speed is tracked against a background that darkens faster than the sky above it, and the returner loses the ball first.
Officials assess whether both players can pick up the ball consistently, taking account of shadows across the court, which fall unevenly as the sun drops behind a stand.
Because one end may be markedly darker than the other, a court can become unplayable while the general light level still looks acceptable from the stands.
The roofed courts changed the calculation
Retractable roofs and full artificial lighting removed weather and darkness as reasons to stop on the principal courts, but only after the roof has closed and the air has settled.
Closing takes time, and the enclosed environment is more humid, so the ball travels differently once play resumes. Players adjust to conditions that have genuinely changed.
Outside courts remain exposed, which means the same rain suspends most of the tournament while two matches continue uninterrupted.
A local curfew sets the hard stop
Play under the roof is limited by a planning condition imposed when the roof was approved, reflecting the tournament's position within a residential area.
That condition is a legal constraint rather than a tournament rule, so it cannot be waived because a match is close or a broadcaster wants the finish.
Matches are therefore suspended mid-set when the hour arrives, and the schedulers work backwards from it when deciding what to start in the evening.
Suspension has competitive consequences
A player with momentum loses it overnight, while an opponent gains time to receive advice, treat an injury and reset a losing position.
Resumptions also disturb rhythm, since a match restarted the following afternoon begins with a fresh warm-up and, often, different weather and a different court speed.
The rules accept that unfairness because the alternative, playing on unsafe grass or in poor light, distributes the risk to bodies rather than to scorelines.
