The fastest serves recorded in professional tennis attract enormous attention, yet the players who win most service points are not always the hardest hitters. Placement and disguise do more of the work.
The returner's problem is time and position
A return begins with a decision about where to stand and which way to move. Speed shortens the time available, but placement decides whether the movement is possible at all.
A serve struck wide on the deuce court pulls the returner off the court entirely. The next ball is then played into space the returner cannot cover.
Reducing reaction time helps. Removing the returner from the court helps more, because the advantage persists into the following shot rather than expiring at contact.
Disguise removes the guess
Returners read the toss, the shoulder turn and the racket path to anticipate direction. A server whose motion looks identical for every target denies them all of that information.
Without a read, the returner must wait, and waiting costs a fraction of a second that a well-placed serve converts into a weak reply.
Consistency of motion is therefore worth more than a few extra kilometres per hour, which most professional returners can handle once they know where the ball is going.
The second serve sets the ceiling
A server who cannot land the second serve on a reliable target is under pressure regardless of first-serve power. The double fault is the only error a server commits alone.
Heavy spin allows a second serve to clear the net comfortably and still drop inside the box, trading raw speed for margin over the net.
The kick that results pushes the returner backwards and upwards into an awkward contact point, which is a positional gain rather than a speed one.
Speed carries a physical cost
A serve near a player's maximum recruits the whole kinetic chain and loads the shoulder and lower back heavily. It cannot be repeated indefinitely across a long match.
Over several hours, a server living at maximum effort loses accuracy first and speed second. The decline usually arrives in the sets that decide the match.
Managing that budget means choosing when to attempt a big serve rather than reaching for one on every point of the match.
Conditions change the calculation
On a fast, low-bouncing surface, speed converts more directly into free points because the returner has less margin in which to recover position.
On slower courts the ball sits up and gives the returner time to set. Angle and spin retain their value where pure pace does not.
The best servers adjust the mix rather than the maximum, which is why service statistics travel across surfaces far better than radar readings do.
