Top speed is the number that travels. A player hits thirty-six kilometres an hour, it appears on a graphic, the clip goes round, and everybody agrees he is quick. Fine. Now ask how he stopped.

Braking is where the damage lives. Accelerating loads the muscle in a way it is fairly well built for. Decelerating hard, particularly from high speed over a short distance, loads it while it is lengthening, and that eccentric demand is what shreds hamstrings and quadriceps and grinds down knees and ankles over a season. A high-intensity deceleration is not a rest between efforts. It is an effort, arguably the more expensive one, and it is routinely counted as the end of the previous action rather than as an action in its own right.

Counterpressing is a deceleration machine. That is the part I think gets underrated in the debate about whether pressing systems burn players out. It is not simply that pressing sides run more. It is that pressing produces a specific pattern of short sprints ending in sudden stops and direction changes, over and over, in a way that possession football and low blocks do not. Two teams can post similar total distances and similar sprint counts while one of them has done twice as much braking.

The tracking systems can measure this. Wearables and optical systems both produce deceleration counts, and any decent sports science department has them. The trouble is that they arrive as an intimidating column among forty other columns, they are noisy, the thresholds differ between vendors so nobody can compare across clubs, and the coach in the room wants one number that tells him whether to rest somebody. Total distance wins that competition every time because everybody understands it.

I would take the trade the other way. Give me high-intensity decelerations per minute on the pitch, split by position, and I will happily lose total distance entirely. Distance mostly tells you how the game went. Braking load tells you what it cost.

None of this is a secret in the literature. It is a translation failure between the department that measures and the department that decides, and translation failures are how a squad ends up with three hamstrings in a fortnight and a manager complaining publicly about the fixture list.

The fixture list is not innocent. But neither is the way we stop.
