Ask most supporters when a hamstring goes and they will describe a straight line sprint, a player pulling up, a hand on the back of the thigh. The image is right. The explanation is usually wrong. The muscle rarely fails while it is shortening to drive you forward. It fails while it is lengthening under tension, which is what happens as the leg swings forward before the foot lands, and again when you are trying to stop.

Deceleration is the forgotten half of running. To slow from full pace in three steps, the body has to absorb roughly as much energy as it produced getting there, and it absorbs it through muscles that are being stretched while contracting hard. That is the highest tension state a hamstring or a quadriceps ever sees. And a footballer does not decelerate in a laboratory. He does it while turning, off balance, with a shoulder in his back.

Now consider how loads are usually monitored. Sprint distance, top speed, number of efforts above a threshold. All of that measures the accelerating half of the movement. Deceleration counts exist in most systems and almost nobody builds a week around them. So a squad is managed carefully for the cheap thing and blind to the expensive one.

The practical version of this is a training week that ends with a lot of small sided work on a short pitch. Short pitch means constant stopping and turning, dozens of decelerations per player, and a coach who honestly believes he has given the group a light session because nobody covered much ground. The distance was low. The tension was enormous.

There is a decent argument that the answer is more exposure rather than less, and I lean that way. Tissue adapts to what you ask of it. A player who has never braked at full speed in training will brake at full speed in the seventieth minute of a cup tie with no preparation at all, and that is when things tear. Eccentric strength work is dull and unglamorous and it is the closest thing the sport has to a preventative.

If a club tells me it manages hamstring risk by capping sprints, I hear a club that is managing the number it can see. The dangerous number is happening three steps after that.
