Reverse swing appears when a ball is old, dry and heavily worn, and it moves in the opposite direction to conventional swing. The mechanism is aerodynamic and depends on a specific and fragile combination of conditions.
Conventional swing depends on a smooth side
A new ball has a raised seam and two smooth halves. Angling the seam creates turbulent airflow on one side and smooth airflow on the other, and the pressure difference pushes the ball sideways.
Bowlers preserve this by polishing one half and leaving the other alone, which maintains the asymmetry the effect depends on for as long as possible.
As both sides roughen with use, the difference narrows and conventional swing fades, usually well before the innings is old.
Roughness changes the airflow entirely
When one side becomes genuinely rough while the other stays smooth and shiny, the airflow pattern inverts at sufficient speed and the ball moves towards the shiny side.
The reversal happens because a rough surface trips the airflow into turbulence earlier, which delays separation on that side and shifts the pressure imbalance the other way.
Because the effect requires the airflow to reach a particular regime, reverse swing is strongly associated with high pace and rarely appears from slower bowlers.
Ground conditions decide whether it appears
Abrasive, dry outfields wear a ball quickly, which is why reverse swing is more common on hard grounds with sparse grass cover.
Damp outfields keep the ball soft and even, so it deteriorates slowly and symmetrically, and the required contrast between the two sides never develops.
Humidity works against it as well, since moisture in the air keeps the rough side from drying out fully and blunts the contrast.
Maintaining the ball is a team discipline
Fielding sides assign shining duties and return the ball along the ground rather than bouncing it in, because a single bounce on rough turf can scuff the wrong side.
The laws permit polishing with sweat and permit drying the ball, but prohibit artificial substances and deliberate damage, and the boundary between the two has produced repeated controversy.
Umpires inspect the ball periodically and may change it, which resets the process and removes an advantage a side may have spent thirty overs building.
It changes how batting is organised
Reverse swing arrives late, when a set batter expects the ball to be soft and the bowling to be manageable, so it disturbs the usual rhythm of an innings.
Because it moves late in flight and is delivered full, it targets the base of the stumps and the pads rather than the edge of the bat.
Sides facing it often accelerate before it develops, treating the middle overs as a window that will close rather than as a phase to consolidate.
