The playing surface is a living crop
The courts are sown with hard-wearing ryegrass, chosen for its ability to recover from wear rather than for how it looks on camera.
Growth is managed through the year so the sward reaches the right density and maturity in early summer, neither too soon nor too late.
A grass court is therefore a crop with a harvest date, and the date cannot be moved to suit the crop.
The soil below matters more than the blades
Bounce comes largely from the compacted soil beneath the grass, and its moisture content determines how much the surface gives under a landing ball.
Rolling consolidates that base over months, producing a firmness that keeps the ball low and, more importantly, keeps it consistent.
Two courts with identical grass but different soil moisture will play noticeably differently, which is why watering is measured rather than generous.
Wear is designed for, not prevented
The grass behind the baselines and around the service line degrades quickly under professional footwork, and by the second week it has largely gone.
Groundstaff plan the schedule knowing this, spreading early matches across outside courts to delay the damage on the principal show courts.
Bare patches are accepted because replacing turf mid-tournament would create an inconsistent surface, which is a worse outcome than a worn one.
Cutting height is a tactical setting
The grass is cut extremely short, and small changes in height alter how much the ball skids and how much grip the players get.
A consistent height across every court is essential, since players move between courts within a tournament and cannot recalibrate their timing each time.
Mowing is therefore done daily to a fixed setting rather than whenever the grass appears to need it.
Weather is the uncontrolled variable
Rain softens the base and makes the surface unsafe well before it becomes unplayable, which is why the covers go on so quickly.
Heat dries the soil and speeds the court up, so watering schedules shift through the fortnight to hold the playing characteristics steady.
Roofs have removed the scheduling risk on the main courts, but not the groundstaff's central problem, which is keeping every court behaving alike.
