Watch a defensive backhand on a hard court and count how many players stop with a stride and how many arrive sliding. Twenty years ago it was almost nobody outside the clay specialists. Now it is close to everyone, and it happens on a surface made of acrylic paint over sand over concrete.

That change is not just stylistic. Sliding is a superior way of arriving at a wide ball because deceleration is spread over a longer distance rather than absorbed by a single hard plant, so the knee and the ankle see lower peak loads, and the player finishes in a position to recover rather than stopping dead and pushing off from a standstill. Players did not adopt it for aesthetics. It works.

The equipment underneath has not settled. A clay outsole uses a full herringbone that releases sand and lets the foot travel, and it wears through on a hard court in a fortnight. A hard court outsole is built for grip and durability, with dense rubber and a modified pattern that resists exactly the movement the modern player now wants. What the tour has ended up with is a set of compromise designs that neither slide predictably nor stop reliably, and the difference between the two states can be a few degrees of temperature or a slightly worn court behind the baseline.

The unpredictability is the injury. A slide that catches halfway is far worse for the ankle than either a clean stop or a clean slide, because the foot decelerates while the body keeps going, and that is the mechanism behind a large share of the ankle rolls you see on hard courts.

My view is that this is a court problem more than a shoe problem. Surface texture is specified for pace and for durability, not for consistent release under a sliding foot, and it varies between venues and across the life of a resurfacing far more than players are allowed to complain about publicly. The shoe companies are trying to solve at the outsole something that is being created at the paint mixture.

There is a straightforward reform available. Publish a friction specification for tournament resurfacing and hold venues to it, in the way ball pressure and net height are held.

Nobody will, because a slow court and a grippy court are competitive assets, and hosts have never been in the business of giving those away.
